[6] So the highest faculty in a human being is not simply to exist, because the elements too share in the simple fact of existence; nor is it to exist in compound form, for that is found in minerals; nor is it to exist as a living thing, for plants too share in that; nor is it to exist as a creature with sense perception, for that is also shared by the lower animals; but it is to exist as a creature who apprehends by means of the potential intellect: this mode of existence belongs to no creature (whether higher or lower) other than human beings.

[7] For while there are indeed other beings who like us are endowed with intellect, nonetheless their intellect is not ‘potential’ in the way that man’s is, since such beings exist only as intelligences and nothing else, and their very being is simply the act of understanding that their own nature exists; and they are engaged in this ceaselessly, otherwise they would not be eternal. It is thus clear that the highest potentiality of mankind is his intellectual potentiality or faculty [quod ultimum de potentia ipsius humanitatis est potentia sive virtus intellectiva].

[8] And since that potentiality cannot be fully actualised all at once in any one individual or in any one of the particular social groupings enumerated above [per unum hominem seu per aliquam particularium comunitatum], there must needs be a vast number of individual people in the human race [necesse est multitudinem esse in humano genere], through whom the whole of this potentiality can be actualised; just as there must be a great variety of things which can be generated so that the whole potentiality of prime matter can continuously be actualised; otherwise one would be postulating a potentiality existing separately from actualisation, which is impossible. [9] And Averroes is in agreement with this opinion in his commentary on the De anima. Now the intellectual potentiality of which I am speaking is not only concerned with universal ideas or classes, but also (by extension as it were) with particulars; and so it is often said that the theoretical intellect by extension becomes practical, its goal then being doing and making.

[Step 1. The closest I can find: 1950, lettre II; all emphases mine:]

La chair pousse à dire moi et le diable pousse à dire nous ; ou bien à dire, comme les dictateurs, je avec une signification collective. Et, conformément à sa mission propre, le diable fabrique une fausse imitation du divin, de l’ersatz de divin.

Par social je n’entends pas tout ce qui se rapporte à une cité, mais seulement les sentiments collectifs.

Je sais bien qu’il est inévitable que l’Église soit aussi une chose sociale ; sans quoi elle n’existerait pas. Mais pour autant qu’elle est une chose sociale elle appartient au Prince de ce monde. C’est parce qu’elle est un organe de conservation et de transmission de la vérité qu’il y a là un extrême danger pour ceux qui sont comme moi vulnérables à l’excès aux influences sociales. Car ainsi ce qu’il y a de plus pur et ce qui souille le plus, étant semblables et confondus sous les mêmes mots, font un mélange presque indécomposable.

Il existe un milieu catholique prêt à accueillir chaleureusement quiconque y entre. Or je ne veux pas être adoptée dans un milieu, habiter dans un milieu où on dit « nous » et être une partie de ce « nous », me trouver chez moi dans un milieu humain quel qu’il soit. [Step 2. Steiner's Sainte Simone is a review of an anthology called Simone Weil's Philosophy of Culture. Two quotes:]

[Not amending "halo or 'We'" any more -- these all concur in it, so clearly Mendes Flohr and Steiner are quoting accurately. Steiner presents this as a paraphrase made by Andic, not as a citation by Weil. Now we have to keep following the trail to Andic, "Discernement and the Imagination" in Simone Weil's Philosophy of Culture ed. Richard Bell. [[Weil against Durkheim is part of the context... that's for another cup.]] So here's Step 3, Andic:]

Avec les Touaregs et avec les Chaouias, les Maures de Mauritanie, ça m'a apporté d'abord la connaissance d'une société courtoise, chevaleresque.

Et à partir de la connaissance de cette société, ça m'a apporté aussi une espèce de vision... plus lointaine, plus... pleine de sérénité... de nos petits travers... nationaux.

Dire qu'on connaît profondément une population, qu'on s'est assimilé à une population, c'est pas vrai. Mais on peut aller aussi loin qu'on peut, dans la compréhension. À la limite, on ne connaît même pas sa propre famille. On ne se connaît même pas soi-même. The English word artichoke was borrowed in the sixteenth century from the northern Italian word articiocco (the standard modern Italian being carciofo). The Italian term was itself borrowed either from Spanish alcarchofa (today usually alcachofa) or directly from the source of the Spanish word—medieval Andalusi Arabic الخرشوفة (al-kharshūfa, including the Arabic definite article al). À être «réveilée» en sa fraîcheur, cette métaphore comme toute autre, s'avère ce qu'elle est chez les surréalistes.

La métaphore radicale est donnée dans l'accès de rage rapporté par Freud de l'enfant, encore inorme en grossièreté, que fut son homme­-aux-rats avant de s'achever en névrosé obsessionnel, lequel, d'être contré par son père l'interpelle : «Du Lampe, du Handtuch, du Teller usw.» (Toi lampe, toi serviette, toi assiette..., et quoi encore). En quoi le père hésite à authentifier le crime ou le génie.

En quoi nous-même entendons qu'on ne perde pas la dimension d'injure où s'origine la métaphore. Injure plus grave qu'on ne l'imagine à la réduire à l'invective de la guerre. Car c'est d'elle que procède l'injus­tice gratuitement faite à tout sujet d'un attribut par quoi n'importe quel autre sujet est suscité à l'entamer. «Le chat fait oua-oua, le chien fait miaou-miaou.» Voilà comment l'enfant épelle les pouvoirs du discours et inaugure la pensée.

Bei genauerem Durchdenken wurde dieser Plan fallengelassen und es kam zur Niederschrift der »Theorie des Romans« in ihrer heuti­gen Fassung. Sie entstand also in einer Stimmung der permanenten Verzweiflung über den Weltzustand. Erst das Jahr 1917 hat für mich eine Antwort auf bis dahin unlösbar scheinende Fragen gebracht.

The gentleman poet Hayley was a generous fellow, but a man of conventional outlook, and, although he was keen to see Blake prosper, he couldn’t help but try to tame the painter’s wild genius. Blake later wrote: ‘Thy Friendship oft has made my heart to ache: Do be my Enemy for Friendship’s sake.’ Anyone curious enough to look up Blake’s illustrations for Hayley’s Ballads Founded on Anecdotes Relating to Animals will note that this particular pachyderm has the feet of a badly upholstered moggy. The artist was either ‘phoning it in’, or he’d never seen an elephant in his life. The difference between the gig work and the portrait is in the quality of attention.

It's not that the nobel is just better without these tropes; it's that the novel is about the fact that such tropes are illusory. A certain truism about the reality of novels (i.e., that in their obvious artificiality or autobiography they presuppose a world in which fact and fiction are stable, easily distinguished categories) is missing here, can't be reclaimed. This is not a semiautobiographical novel about a novelist, written by a novelist -- what we now call autofiction -- nor is it purely a work of invention.
